In today’s world, we often assume that everyone has at least heard the name of Jesus. However, during their time in Greece, one World Race team encountered an entire community that had never heard of Him. This revelation not only transformed their approach to missions but highlighted the importance of reaching unreached people groups and practicing relational evangelism in places where the Gospel is unknown.

A Cross-Cultural Encounter in Greece:

In June 2022, a team from the World Race found themselves in a small village outside of Corinth. What began as a seemingly simple stay in an Airbnb turned into a profound experience. Initially, the local café owners were skeptical and even told the team, “You can’t be here.” But once the locals learned more, they warmed up and began to welcome the team. Little did the missionaries know, they had entered a village where no one had even heard the name of Jesus – a modern-day example of an unreached people group.

The team was amazed by the opportunity in front of them. They had learned about unreached areas in theory, but this was the first time they had personally encountered people who genuinely didn’t know Jesus. For the missionaries, it was a pivotal moment that ignited a passion for cross-cultural missions.

Relational Evangelism in Action:

One of the most impactful moments came when the team decided to host Bible studies in public spaces. Gathering in the town square, they prayed and studied together, drawing curiosity from the villagers. The team didn’t force the Gospel on anyone; instead, they used relational evangelism to show the people what life in the Kingdom of God looks like. Over time, the locals began engaging with the team, asking questions, and experiencing a glimpse of God’s love.

This is the essence of relational evangelism – connecting with people authentically, not as projects, but as fellow humans made in the image of God. The team’s time in Greece reminded them that missions aren’t just about preaching from a stage or holding large events. It’s about living out the Gospel daily, letting actions speak as loudly as words.

The Role of Prayer in Missions:

Although the team’s stay in the village was short, their work didn’t stop once they left. Even after their departure, they continued to pray for the community, trusting the Holy Spirit to move in ways they couldn’t foresee. Intercessory prayer became a powerful tool for them, asking God to send more laborers into this ripe mission field and to multiply the seeds they had planted.

Their experience emphasizes that short-term missions are not about quick results or immediate conversion numbers. Instead, they are about obedience, laying a foundation, and trusting God to do the rest. The team’s work in the village may have been brief, but their prayers have the potential to bear long-lasting fruit.

The Lasting Impact of Short-Term Missions:

The story of this World Race squad in Greece shows how short-term missions can leave a profound and lasting impact on both the missionaries and the people they serve. Encountering an unreached community, engaging in relational evangelism, and offering prayer for spiritual growth left an indelible mark on the team. It taught them that mission work isn’t just about what they can do in the moment, but about what God can do through their obedience long after they’ve left.

As more and more teams from the World Race continue to spread the Gospel to unreached people groups, stories like this remind us of the power of building relationships, praying for communities, and trusting God with the results. If you’re feeling called to live on mission – whether through prayer, support, or going yourself – there are countless ways to get involved. The harvest is plentiful, and the workers are few. Will you join the call to reach the world for Christ?
