The Hidden Gift: Finding Spiritual Growth Through Discomfort
Nobody signs up for a World Race mission trip because they love being uncomfortable.
Most of us enjoy knowing what to expect. We like our routines, our favorite foods, our familiar places, and the confidence that comes from knowing how things work. Comfort feels safe. Predictable. Manageable.
Then the World Race comes along and disrupts all of it.
Maybe it’s a delayed flight that has a domino effect on all the logistics. Maybe it’s trying to navigate a conversation when you don’t share a common language. Maybe it’s sleeping in a room packed with teammates, taking cold showers, or realizing you haven’t had a moment alone all week.

None of these things are particularly dramatic. In fact, most of them seem fairly insignificant. But when enough small discomforts stack up, they begin to reveal something about us. We start to notice how much of our peace depends on circumstances going the way we want them to.
And that’s where God begins the process of spiritual growth through discomfort.
Why God Uses Discomfort to Refine Us
The truth is, discomfort has a way of exposing things we rarely notice when life is running smoothly. It reveals our need for control. It uncovers impatience. It shows us where we’ve placed our confidence.
But it also creates space for something new.
When plans change and you can’t fix them, you learn flexibility.
When communication is difficult, you learn patience.
When you’re far from home on international missions, you begin to discover that God’s presence isn’t tied to a place, a routine, or a set of circumstances.
He’s just as faithful in the unfamiliar as He is in the familiar.

Finding Joy Beyond the Mission Field Comfort Zone
Many Racers find themselves surprised by the people they meet along the way. Around the world, you’ll encounter individuals and communities who carry incredible joy despite circumstances that would challenge most of us. You’ll meet families who practice radical hospitality with very little to give. You’ll meet ministry partners who continue serving faithfully year after year without recognition or applause.
And somewhere in those encounters, a question begins to surface:
What if joy was never dependent on comfort in the first place?
What if peace wasn’t found in having everything under control?
What if God’s greatest gifts aren’t always found in the places that feel easiest?
How Missions Develops Resilience and Trust
The World Race doesn’t teach you to love discomfort for its own sake. It teaches you that growth often happens in places you wouldn’t have chosen for yourself.
Months later, many Racers look back and realize the moments they once viewed as obstacles became some of the most meaningful parts of their journey. Not because the circumstances were enjoyable, but because God met them there. The uncertainty taught them trust. These mission field challenges taught them resilience. The discomfort taught them dependence.
And perhaps that’s the hidden gift. Not that life becomes harder.
But that you discover God is enough, even when life isn’t easy.

It’s a lesson that can’t always be learned from a book, a sermon, or a comfortable chair at home. Sometimes it has to be experienced.
And once you learn it, it changes the way you walk through every season that follows.
