World Race FAQs: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Because yes—someone else probably already asked that too.
So… you’re thinking about the World Race. You’ve browsed the routes, scrolled through the dreamy photos of racers praying on mountaintops, and maybe imagined yourself eating rice in a village somewhere while hearing God’s voice in a whole new way.
But now you’ve got questions—lots of them.
Can I go if I just graduated? What do I pack? Will I have WiFi? What do I tell my parents?
Friend, you are not alone. Let’s walk through some of the most frequently asked (and most freaked out about) questions we get from potential Racers like you.
“What kind of people are you looking for?”
Are you a Jesus-loving, adventure-willing, heart-for-the-nations type of human? Great. You’re our kind of people.
We’re looking for followers of Jesus who are emotionally healthy (we all have our moments), flexible in unpredictable situations (shoutout to ATL ministry), and open to what God might do when you let go of your own plan.
You don’t need to be perfect. But you do need to be willing.
“How does the application process work?”
Step 1: Fill out our online application.
Step 2: Pick your preferred route or trip.
Step 3: Hop on a phone interview with one of our amazing Admissions Advisors (who are all alumni and know exactly what you’re feeling).
Spoiler alert: Doing the interview doesn’t lock you in for life – it just helps you discern if the World Race is for you.
Once you’re accepted and pay your deposit, we officially save you a spot on your trip, and you’ll get connected with your Advisor who helps you prep, fundraise, and feel 43% less overwhelmed by all the logistics.
“Wait… what if the trip I want fills up?”
If your dream route fills up, don’t panic – we’ve got a waitlist system. You can wait it out and hope a spot opens up, or you can snag a guaranteed spot on another route launching at the same time.
Either way, you’re still going, and we promise God’s gonna use it no matter where you land.
“How old do I have to be to go?”
- World Race: Expedition: 21–30
- World Race: Gap Year: 17–20
- World Race: Semesters: 17–30
“I’m married. Can we go together?”
Yes! Married couples can go – together. (Cue the “Awws.”)
We do ask that couples be married for at least two years before launching. You’ll apply and interview separately, but you’ll be on the same squad.
“What do we actually do on the Race?”
One word: ministry. But it takes so many forms. You could be:
- Leading kids’ ministry in Guatemala
- Praying for healing in East Africa
- Serving meals in Southeast Asia
- Painting classrooms, preaching in churches, or just being present in someone’s hardest moment
Some days are packed; others are slower and focused on prayer and rest. But every day is about bringing God’s Kingdom wherever you are.
“How do teams and leaders work?”
Great question. You’ll travel with a squad (20–40 Racers) and serve in a team (usually 5–7 people). Each team has a peer team leader, and squads have alumni leaders and staff who support you along the way – including spiritual coaches, logistics support, and a squad mentor who’s got your back all year long.
Translation: You won’t be alone.
“What’s Training Camp?”
Training Camp = 11 days of worship, teaching, team bonding, and stretching experiences (yes, maybe even bucket showers) that prepare your heart, mind, and soul for life on the Race.
Semesters participants do Training Camp + Launch all in one go at the start of their trip!
“How much does it cost?”
It depends on the route, but all World Race programs include:
✔️ Food & housing on the field
✔️ International travel between countries
✔️ Travel insurance
✔️ Discipleship and coaching
✔️ Ministry logistics and training
Your Mobilization Advisor will help you create a fundraising plan (and yes—it is possible!). Remember: if God calls you, He’ll provide.
“What if I fundraise and then can’t go?”
Money raised through the World Race is tax-deductible and given to Adventures in Missions to support your trip. If you defer to a later trip, most of those funds can be transferred (minus any non-refundable expenses already paid). But no, the funds raised aren’t technically “yours.”
“Can I defer my student loans while on the Race?”
In most cases, yes! Many Racers successfully defer their loans. Just talk with your loan provider and we’ll help you with any letters or paperwork you need.
“What if my parents have concerns?”
Totally normal! In fact, we have a whole ministry for Racer parents, complete with resources and real humans they can talk to. They can reach out to our Parent Liaison, read our Parent Guide, and ask alllll the questions.
“Is it safe?”
Let’s be real – mission work and travel always come with risks. But we’ve got an incredible risk management team, global partners, and insurance coverage to make sure you’re supported every step of the way. We take safety seriously and have contingency plans in place to respond quickly if anything changes.
“What if I’m still not sure I’m ready?”
Good. That means you’re taking it seriously.
But here’s the thing: you’ll never feel 100% “ready.” The World Race isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about being willing to take the next step and trust God to meet you there. And we’ll walk with you through every part of the journey.
