What is Evangelism?

Evangelism is at the heart of the World Race experience. It’s more than just spreading a message – it’s about being a vessel for the Holy Spirit, sharing God’s love, and trusting that He will use our words to transform lives. For many Racers, evangelism is a key area of growth and spiritual empowerment.

Ellen, a participant from D-Squad, shared her transformative experience during training camp. One of her primary goals in joining the World Race was to grow in her ability to share the gospel and learn to trust the Holy Spirit to speak through her. Her journey provides a powerful glimpse into how God equips and works through His people when they step out in faith.

The Power of Evangelism Training

The World Race begins with an immersive training camp designed to prepare participants for the months ahead. One key focus during this time is evangelism – why we do it, how to approach it meaningfully, and how to rely on the Holy Spirit to lead. Ellen reflected on a pivotal session during camp that delved into the heart of evangelism: “We had a whole session on evangelism, in depth of why we evangelize, things to keep in mind, and how to meaningfully go about sharing the gospel.”

Evangelism isn’t about checking off a box; it’s about embodying God’s love and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you to reach others. The training camp equips Racers with both practical skills and spiritual discernment to share the gospel in a way that is personal, compassionate, and transformational.

Evangelism in Action: A Day at the Supermercado

For Ellen and her team, their first taste of evangelism in action came during a visit to a Hispanic grocery store. Armed with what they had learned in training and fueled by the desire to make an impact, they spent the day sharing the love of Christ with those they encountered.

“It was so exciting,” Ellen shared. “I went into this trip with one of my main goals/desires being that I wanted to gain more experience in sharing the gospel. I wanna be better at it and I want to learn how to more completely trust the Holy Spirit to speak through me.”

Ellen’s team had a profound opportunity to witness God move as they led two individuals, Eliseo and Maria, to Christ. The encounter with Eliseo was especially powerful. “He was so interested in the saving and transforming work of Christ that he asked us to sit down with him at a nearby table, and we proceeded to talk for 30 minutes,” Ellen recounted. “He understood that his past failures of sin would never again appear in God’s eyes once he decided to put his faith in Jesus, and step into those new clothes of relationship with God.”

In that moment, Ellen and her team witnessed the power of the gospel in action – the transformative grace of Christ moving in Eliseo’s life as he turned his heart toward God. They prayed with him, rejoiced, and sent him on his way with newfound faith and a message of hope.

Trusting the Holy Spirit

One of the key takeaways from Ellen’s experience is the importance of trusting the Holy Spirit during evangelism. Sharing the gospel can feel intimidating, but as Ellen’s story shows, it’s not about our ability to craft perfect words; it’s about trusting the Holy Spirit to guide us and speak through us.

This idea is foundational to the World Race. As Racers travel from country to country, they encounter diverse cultures, languages, and challenges. But in every situation, they are reminded to lean into God’s leading, trusting that He will open doors and create opportunities to share His love.

Ellen’s story reminds us that evangelism is an act of faith. It’s stepping out in trust, knowing that God is already at work in the hearts of those we meet.

The Joy of Evangelism

One of the most beautiful aspects of evangelism is the joy that comes from seeing others experience the love of Christ. Ellen’s story is a testament to that joy. After leading Eliseo and Maria to Christ, she and her team couldn’t contain their excitement: “We prayed with him, and sent him on his way with hugs and exclamations of joy, saying: ‘The angels in heaven are rejoicing, for you have turned to the Father who loves you and created you to be with him for eternity.’ We were so excited to see our faith in God in action through this encounter and through Eliseo!”

Evangelism is about planting seeds of faith, but it’s also about rejoicing when those seeds take root. Every conversation, every prayer, every moment of sharing God’s love is an opportunity to celebrate what God is doing.
