The Journey of Becoming: Who You Are vs. Who God is Shaping You to Be

The World Race isn’t just about where you go. It’s about who you become along the way.

For many Racers, the journey begins with questions: Who am I? What is my role in God’s Kingdom? How do my gifts fit into His greater plan? But as months unfold, through ministry, travel, community, and unexpected challenges, God begins to reshape those answers. He reveals that who you are today is only the starting point for who He’s calling you to be.

Where You Start Isn’t Where You’ll Stay

Amanda, a current Racer, shared that she began the Race with ideas of what her ministry would look like. She imagined serving in big, visible ways. Instead, she found herself sitting across from a woman on Red Street in the Philippines, simply listening to her story and offering prayer. That quiet yes became a holy moment.

“I got to share about Jesus being the motivation behind everything we do,” Amanda said. “As she opened up about her struggles, the Holy Spirit truly moved through our prayer together. It brought both of us to tears.”

Sometimes God shapes us not through grand gestures but through simple obedience.

Grace for the Process

Amanda describes her time across Southeast Asia as a crash course in God’s grace. In Thailand, she stepped into hard conversations she never felt equipped for, yet grace carried her. In Malaysia, she walked through deep inner healing, surrounded by safe community, grace met her there, too. In the Philippines, where darkness felt overwhelming, God provided a home filled with laughter, prayer, and protection – a gift of grace again.

The World Race isn’t about becoming someone else overnight. It’s about learning, again and again, that His grace is sufficient for who you are right now, and it’s more than enough to lead you into who you’re becoming.

Who You’re Becoming Matters

On the Race, Racers discover that identity is more than titles or tasks. It’s about living out of God’s love, not striving to earn it. It’s about finding that who you’re becoming, a disciple shaped by surrender, compassion, and courage, is exactly what the world needs.

As Amanda put it, “I am continually blown away by God’s goodness, and how much He is willing to do to get to each one of His children.”

That’s the heart of becoming: letting God refine you, so your life becomes a reflection of His heart for others.
