How the World Race Teaches You to Listen: Hearing God’s Voice in a Noisy World

We live in a world that never stops talking. News alerts, scrolling headlines, endless reels, constant commentary – everywhere you turn, someone is trying to tell you what to think, what to fear, or who to be.

“I’ve got breaking news tonight…”

And beneath all the noise, tragedy echoes. Wars rage. Families break. People search for hope in all the wrong places. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, even paralyzed.

But what if the answer to the world’s chaos isn’t found in louder voices — but in learning to listen?

That’s one of the most transformative lessons Racers learn on the World Race: before you can go out and change the world, you have to quiet down enough to hear God’s heart for it.

Learning to Listen in the Chaos

On the Race, life gets stripped back to what matters most. There’s no algorithm to tell you what to feel or think. There’s no Wi-Fi on the mountaintops of Nepal, or in the villages of Eswatini.

Instead, you wake up to the sound of worship in another language. You sit with people who have stories of loss and perseverance. You walk streets marked by both beauty and brokenness.

And slowly, the noise begins to fade. What’s left is the voice of God – gentle, steady, present – reminding you that He still speaks, still leads, and still calls His people to be light in the darkest places.

The Practice of Listening Prayer

At the heart of the World Race is a simple rhythm: ask, listen, obey. Racers learn to pause before rushing into ministry and ask, “God, what do You want us to do today?”

They wait. They listen. And then, they move – not out of strategy, but out of obedience.

Sometimes that means stopping to pray for a stranger on the street. Sometimes it means visiting a neighbor’s home instead of running an outreach event. Sometimes it means resting when everything in you wants to push harder.

In listening, you realize God’s plans are always better, and often far more personal, than your own.

The world doesn’t need more noise. It needs more people who listen.

Because when you learn to hear God’s voice, you start to notice the quiet cries of those around you: the weary, the overlooked, the ones the world has written off. You begin to carry the Gospel not as an argument to win, but as love that heals.

The World Race doesn’t just train missionaries; it teaches disciples how to live tuned in to the frequency of Heaven, to bring light and life into tragedy, chaos, and pain.

God Is Still Speaking. Are You Listening?

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the world or disconnected from God’s voice, maybe it’s time to step into stillness and rediscover what it means to hear Him again.

The World Race creates the space to do that, away from the noise, surrounded by community, and immersed in the places where the world needs the hope of Jesus most.
