Faith in the Unknown: How Uncertainty Builds Trust

What if the very thing you fear – the unknown – is the very place where God wants to meet you?
The World Race is full of unknowns. You step onto a plane bound for a country you’ve never visited, with people you’ve just met, to do ministry you haven’t fully imagined. There’s no blueprint, no certainty of what each day will hold. And yet, it’s in the middle of that uncertainty that Racers learn one of the greatest lessons of their faith: trusting God is not just an option – it’s the only way forward.
The Tension Between Fear and Faith
Every Racer begins their journey with some level of fear. The fear of the unfamiliar, of not having control, of stepping into a story that’s bigger than themselves. But time and time again, God proves that He is not just present in the uncertainty – He is leading through it.
One Racer, Daniel, reflected on his first few weeks on the field:
“I had never felt so out of my depth. We arrived in a village where no one spoke English, where we had no set schedule, and I had no idea what I was supposed to ‘do’ for God. But in the stillness of that moment, I felt Him whisper: ‘You don’t have to know. I know. Just trust Me.’”
The unknown invites dependence. It strips away the safety nets we’ve built for ourselves and replaces them with something better – a deeper reliance on God’s voice, His provision, and His presence.
Learning to Walk by Faith, Not Sight
When you’re thousands of miles from home, stripped of routine and predictability, your only choice is to trust that God will show up. The World Race teaches Racers to embrace faith over fear by leaning into the unknown, not running from it.
- Trusting God for Direction: In countries where maps are unreliable or plans change by the hour, Racers learn that flexibility is not just practical – it’s spiritual. They pray for guidance, then move forward in faith.
- Trusting God for Provision: Many Racers experience moments where they have no idea how a need will be met – until God miraculously provides. From unexpected meals given by generous locals to last-minute opportunities to share the Gospel, faith is built through firsthand encounters with God’s provision.
- Trusting God for Strength: Whether it’s trekking through remote villages in Nepal or adjusting to the spiritual climate of Morocco, Racers find that their own strength isn’t enough. But God’s power is made perfect in weakness.
One Racer shared:
“We were in Ethiopia, exhausted and overwhelmed. We had been asked to speak to a church congregation with no preparation. I was terrified – what could I possibly say? But when I stepped up, God gave me the words. It wasn’t about my ability, it was about my willingness to trust Him in that moment.”
The Transformation That Comes from Trusting God
By the end of the World Race, Racers don’t just believe in God’s faithfulness – they know it. The transformation that takes place in the unfamiliar is undeniable. Fear is replaced with confidence, doubt is replaced with boldness, and uncertainty is replaced with unwavering faith.
Through the discomfort of the unknown, Racers step into a faith that is no longer conditional on their circumstances but anchored in the unshakable character of God.
This transformation doesn’t just stay on the field – it follows Racers home, shaping the way they approach their careers, relationships, and lifelong mission.
