An island nation still healing from a devastating civil war that ended in 2009. Buddhist-majority with a small but faithful Christian community that has faced persecution. The 2019 Easter bombings killed over 250 worshippers. You will serve alongside Sri Lankan churches doing post-war reconciliation, community development, children’s ministry, and gospel proclamation. Sri Lanka will show you what it looks like to worship in a church that was bombed and chose to rebuild.

Culture

Life in Sri Lanka moves at a relationship-centered pace. Whether you’re in a busy city or a rural village, people generally value kindness, hospitality, and taking time to get to know one another. Don’t be surprised if a simple conversation turns into an invitation for tea.

Religion plays an important role in everyday life, with Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities all contributing to the country’s rich cultural landscape. Places of worship are treated with deep respect, and visitors are expected to dress modestly and behave thoughtfully while visiting.

Respect is one of the quickest ways to build trust. Dress modestly, remove your shoes when entering many homes and sacred places, and be mindful of local traditions. Listen well, ask thoughtful questions, and let your hosts teach you about their culture.

Explore

Sri Lanka is small enough to explore in a single trip but diverse enough to feel like several countries in one. One day you can climb the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the next wander through misty tea plantations in the central highlands, and by evening watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Nature lovers will feel right at home. National parks are home to Asian elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and one of the world’s highest densities of leopards. Along the coast, you can spot sea turtles, dolphins, and even blue whales during the right season.

Wherever you travel, slow down and enjoy the journey. Ride the famous hill-country train, sample fresh tropical fruit from roadside stands, explore centuries-old temples, and watch daily life unfold in fishing villages and mountain towns. Sri Lanka’s greatest adventures are often found between the destinations.
