The Basics
The largest country in the world, Russia, straddles Europe and Asia, spanning 11 time zones.
Following the 1917 Revolution, the Communist Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed.
This first ever atheist state played an important role in World War II and later became a superpower during the Cold War.
Though the Soviet Union fell in 1991, its effects are still evident today.
Less than 40% of the population practice any religion, and the nation is also a primary source, transit, and destination point for human trafficking.
Will you share God’s love and hope for the future in Russia?
Culture
The physically cold environment and totalitarian Soviet past are deeply woven into Russian culture. Many travelers to Russia would describe the people as stoic. Russians are quite demonstrative in their body language, however. Handshakes, hugs, and kisses on the cheek are common.
Guests in Russia find that they are treated very hospitably. Russians love meal times, and it is best not to refuse food.
It is rude to refer to a Russian as “comrade”.

Explore
One of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in all of Russia is the The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg. If you are in the city over the summer, you will have plenty of time to see it—it stays light for almost 24 hours!
Lake Baikal in Eastern Siberia offers some of the finest scenic views in Russia.
If in Moscow, be sure to visit the Red Square. Full of history, this square contains the famed Kremlin, St Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM department store, and Lenin’s Mausoleum.
