Mission Trips

The Basics

Known for its vast Namib desert, which has the highest sand dunes in the world, Namibia is the driest African country south of the Equator. Once a German colony, in the early 1900s the German government killed over 75,000 indigenous people in what is considered a precursor to the Holocaust. The nation was later occupied by South Africa, where racial prejudice and apartheid ruled. Finally in 1990, Namibia gained independence. Though almost 90% of Namibians claim Christianity, there is still a great need for redemption, forgiveness, and healing. Will you join God’s work of restoration in Namibia?

Culture

Namibia has massive economic inequality. There is a small wealthy elite that control the majority of all goods. Segregation continues to be an issue since the end of apartheid, although more non-whites have joined the upper classes. Whites only represent 7% of the population and own most of the large businesses.

One of the main ethnic groups living in Southern Namibia is the Herero. To this day they are still very influenced by the Europeans who visited them in the 19th century. Many of the Herero claim Christianity due to this time period, and many of the women wear Victorian-style dresses with large, horn-shaped headgear.

Explore

Namibia is a land of adventures and beautiful landscapes. From the wildlife in Etosha National Park to the gorgeous Fish RIver Canyon, Namibia contains numerous travel-worthy sights.

Some of the most famous views in Namibia are the long and winding sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

Germany spent some time in Namibia in the 19th century and left behind a few things like a Namibian Oktoberfest and a surreal little German town called Lüderitz. It’s worth the visit.
