Mission Trips

The Basics

Located in the Horn of Africa, Middle Eastern and African tribal influences touch every corner of Ethiopia. The birthplace of coffee, literary and archaeological discoveries date back to Bible times. The Orthodox Church even claims to have the Ark of the Covenant. It’s also a nation well acquainted with pain. In the last century, civil wars and famine devastated the land. Those in rural villages remain isolated, without clean water or access to markets, and the country’s ability to provide basic services is strained. Will you share the love of Jesus with people hungry for hope?

Culture

Ethiopia has a very traditional culture. It is unacceptable for Christian women to show their knees or shoulders, so no tank tops or shorts. Men should also plan to wear pants at all times. Also, if you are a Christian, it is frowned upon to dance to or sing along with secular music.

Ethiopians value hospitality and are very proud to be the birthplace of coffee. If you get a chance, make sure to experience a coffee ceremony with a local family.

Respect is very important in Ethiopian culture. People stand when an elderly person enters a room—and remain standing until they are seated.

Explore

Take some time to explore Wenchi Crater Lake. It is an extinct volcano offering spectacular views. Be sure to take the hike up to the hot springs while you are there.

Do you need to pick up a few gifts for friends and family at home? Sabahar is the place for you. This is a really cool place where they harvest silkworms to make their own silk that they use to make scarves, blankets, towels, pillowcases etc.

Witness the remote expanse of Simien Mountains National Park.

Feed a hyena in Harar.
