Mission Trips

The Basics

The smallest, flattest, and driest continent, Australia is known for its beautiful beaches, large Outback desert, and Great Barrier Reef. Though claimed by Great Britain as a penal colony in the 1700s, it is now one of the wealthiest countries on earth. The nation also has many first world struggles, with some of the highest housing prices—and household debts—in the world. Over 60% of the population is obese, and 22% don’t claim to practice any religion. Though materially wealthy and comfortable, many Australians need to experience the hope of Jesus. Will you live your faith in the Land Down Under?

Australians are very friendly and easy going. The accepted greeting is smiling, making eye contact, and shaking hands briefly.

The standard verbal greeting is “Good morning” or “Good afternoon.” Handshakes and greetings will usually be followed by a question such as, “How are you doing?” A long, detailed answer is not expected or especially wanted. After this quick, seemingly superficial exchange, the next topic will be business.

While it is polite to make eye contact with an Aussie, it is considered rude when talking with Aboriginal people.

Australia is a beach lover’s paradise. Spend a day surfing, enjoying the beach, or even head over to the Great Barrier Reef and go snorkeling!

Explore Melbourne, a city with Victorian era architecture and its own modern culture.

Check out any of the national parks, or even adventure into the Outback. Just be on the look out for the local wildlife and make sure you don’t get lost!

If you are near Sydney, make sure to check out the Harbour and the famous Opera House.
