Why Your Twenties Feel So Confusing (And Why That’s Not a Bad Thing)

If you’re in your late teens or twenties, chances are you’ve asked yourself at least one of these questions:

What am I supposed to do with my life?
Am I falling behind?
Why does everyone else seem to have it figured out except me?

It’s a strange season of life. Some of your friends are getting married. Others are graduating college, launching careers, or moving across the country. Social media makes it look like everyone is confidently stepping into their future, but many are quietly seeking purpose in their twenties just like you.

Why You Aren’t Falling Behind in Life

It’s easy to believe you’re behind. But what if you’re not?

What if this season isn’t meant to be about having all the answers, but about becoming the person God is shaping you to be?

Your Twenties Are a Season of Formation

Our culture loves certainty. We’re told to choose the right school, the right career, the right city, and somehow have a ten-year plan before we’ve even had the chance to discover who we are.

But that’s rarely how God works.

Throughout Scripture, He invites people to follow Him one step at a time. Abraham didn’t know where he was going. The disciples left everything without seeing the whole picture. God formed them as they walked with Him, not before.

Maybe He’s doing the same with you.

Instead of revealing every detail of your future, He may be inviting you to trust Him with what’s right in front of you—perhaps through a season of missions or intentional service.

Sometimes You Need New Perspective Before You Find New Direction

One of the reasons this season can feel confusing is because we’ve spent much of our lives following a predictable path. School leads to graduation. Graduation leads to the next thing. Before we know it, we’re making major life decisions without ever slowing down long enough to ask why.

Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder; it comes from stepping into a completely different environment, like a Christian gap year or a mission field.

Experiencing another culture. Serving people whose lives look nothing like your own. Living in intentional community. Learning to depend on God when your plans change. Those experiences have a way of stripping away distractions and helping you recognize what truly matters.

It’s often there that your gifts begin to surface, your perspective begins to expand, and your calling starts to feel a little less distant.

God Cares More About Who You’re Becoming Than What You’re Becoming

It’s natural to wonder what career you’ll pursue or where you’ll eventually settle down. Those decisions matter. But before God calls us to a profession, He calls us to Himself.

He’s far more interested in shaping your character than handing you a five-year plan. As you grow in compassion, humility, courage, and faith, you’ll find that those qualities become the foundation for whatever career, ministry, or opportunity He places before you.

Your calling isn’t simply about what you do; it’s about the kind of person you become. This is the heart of discipleship.

Don’t Rush the Questions

If your future feels uncertain right now, take heart. You don’t have to force clarity before its time.

This season isn’t wasted simply because you don’t have every answer. In fact, these years often become the very place where God lays the foundation for everything that follows.

The questions you’re asking today may be preparing you for the life He’ll invite you into tomorrow.

What If Your Next Step Isn’t College or a Career… Yet?

For many, finding purpose in your twenties involves slowing down long enough to let God shape your heart before rushing into a career.
