Yesterday our last, but not least Mentor entered the scene. After a long flight from the States, he chose to show up and meet the community he would be impacting at our worship night. This was our first clue to how special and big-hearted this man was.

Dave Kuhnert wrote a book called Servant Leadership, and he came all the way to Italy to teach us about it and also show us through example how it works. We only had our first lesson, and we are already enamored with the gold that Dave is offering us.

We all have a reality in which we live. If we live too far from reality we have conflict and confusion. But if we rightly can see where we are in the space he terms “here”, then we can name a purpose, goal, or vision known as “there” that we can find a path toward.

On this journey for the past 2 weeks, we have used this “here – path to – there” thought work to make personal development plans. In the beginning, we came up with the growth we wanted to have during these 2 months and what steps we would take to see that growth happen. We have had check-ins with our coaches (one of our leaders) a few times in order to have accountability for moving in the right direction on these growth plans.

We all had different reasons for coming on this trip. Some for travel, some for community, some for missions, some for school but we all have learned immeasurable amounts about who God is, who we are, and who we want to be. We have all stepped up in leadership and have gained trust and agency to grow and learn in ways that will forever mark us.

Through Dave’s teaching, we are learning and establishing a transcendent “there” which creates a meaningful purpose and pushes us to continue growing, learning, and loving long after this trip ends.
