Turkey is a nation where the deep religious history of the Middle East converges with the modern secularism of the West.
As you walk down the streets of Istanbul, you will smell roasting chestnuts and open-air kebab stands, and hear the resounding call to prayer echo across the city.
You might even be chased down by friendly Turkish people asking you to join them for a cup of tea.
Culture
Direct eye contact is usually expected and appreciated. In some cases women may avoid direct eye contact with men.
When entering a home, you will most likely be expected to take off your shoes. Be aware not to cross your legs so the bottom of your foot is pointing at someone.
Personal space tends to be very close, sometimes disconcertingly so for foreigners used to more space. An arm’s length is generally considered an appropriate amount of personal space when speaking, particularly when interacting with colleagues and acquaintances.
