NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA

Guyana

Mission Trips

The Basics

With its streets echoing with calypso music, Guyana is known for its strong Caribbean culture and dense rainforest. Guyana has one of the largest unspoiled rainforests in South America, and 90% of Guyana’s people live on 10% of its land. Due to a 20-year Marxist economic experiment, living standards fell and foreign investment dried up, leaving the country impoverished until the early 90s. Many people moved to other countries; in fact, over 50% of Guyanese live overseas. Today, Guyana is seeing growth in both Christianity and economic prosperity. Will you join what God is doing in Guyana?

Culture

Despite being in South America, Guyana is a Caribbean nation and culturally is similar to the West Indies.

Guyana is a melting pot of many different cultures originating from colonial times. Guyanese are Amerindian, African, Nepalese, Chinese and Indian descendants with varying British, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish influences. English is the national language, while the national cuisine is a mixture of Creole and Indian curries.

There is a national issue of male abandonment of children due to alcoholism. In many urban areas mothers have become the breadwinners for the family.

Explore

Georgetown is a wonderful place to see a thriving art scene and look at gorgeous architecture from colonial times like the St. George Cathedral. Georgetown also has a menagerie of food options from all over the world. Visit the Stabroek Market for ancient architecture and shopping.

Football and cricket are the main sports played by locals. Go join in a game!

Go to the Canopy Walkway in the Iwokrama Rainforest, a series of suspension bridges above the rainforest where you can spot local wildlife, including red howler monkeys.
