Despite being in South America, Guyana is a Caribbean nation and culturally is similar to the West Indies.
Guyana is a melting pot of many different cultures originating from colonial times. Guyanese are Amerindian, African, Nepalese, Chinese and Indian descendants with varying British, Dutch, Portuguese, and Spanish influences. English is the national language, while the national cuisine is a mixture of Creole and Indian curries.
There is a national issue of male abandonment of children due to alcoholism. In many urban areas mothers have become the breadwinners for the family.
